I think americans move to different parts of their country more often than we do so it makes less sense for them to invest time and love on something that they know is temporary. As Dave Morgan says, some americam gardeners face great challenges from their climates, intense winter cold in the northern half of the country, severe heat in parts of the south and drought in the west. That said I think California and Oregon in the west and Virginia down to Georgia in the east would be excellent areas to create a garden.

we gardeners always like to moan though, don't we?
Too hot, too cold. Too much rain, not enough rain. Soil too light, soil too sticky. Garden too sunny , garden too shady. etc etc.
