Roses

mollimaymollimay Posts: 4

Hi I was given a Hybrid tea rose red ruby anniversary rose.

I have never had a rose before so would like some advice please.

Its in a pot I am posting photos. It has produced three buds but they are drooping when fully out and there are brown spots on leaves. I think it has grown to high.

Help. Thanksimage

    Isn't it beautiful image

If I were you I'd prepare a good spot in the garden as per the advice on this link http://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=191#section-3 and plant it out into the garden.  It will be much happier.

When the individual blooms die I'd cut it off, cutting it back to a strong set of leaves - then it will grow more flowering shoots but that way you'll keep it fairly compact and it won't grow too tall.

Some roses do produce such heavy blooms that they are prone to droop a bit, particularly if weighed down after the rain.  It's a good idea to go out after the rain and shake the blooms gently to get most of the raindrops off.

    Hope that helps image

It wasn't the rain image I got a bit over excited when I saw the buds and when they started to bloom I thought I had better give them a drink, but I didn't shake the water of the blooms.

I am a novice at this so please excuse my stupidnessimage

Pick off the leaves which are infected and burn them. If you leave them on the fungus just spreads and treat immediately with a fungicide. Keep it well watered and fed, this reduces the chances of the black spot returning and keep an eye on it. Black spot can remain in the soil so spray the soil around the plant and pick up any fallen leaves and burn them too. Hygiene around the rose is also important as well as a good flow of air, a mulch of compost or farmyard manure will help retain moisture, but after spraying. A well fed and watered rose is less susceptible to rose diseases and more able to fight off any passing fungus. And watch out for aphids which can transmit disease.

Good rose care is essential for flower production and longevity.

And even if you are a novice mollimay, no question here is ever stupid everyone here will always help no matter what the problem.
