Rose gone native?
in Plants
Hello everyone,
New here, with a rose related question. We have a rambler that started life as a nice pink colour with medium size blooms ( on thin twiggy stems). This year there are a few of this type, but also, from the same plant, thick very fast growing stems with clusters of, what appear to be, small, wild, white roses. Is this common - we are presuming the rose has somehow ' gone native'? Many thanks...

..most roses in this country are grafted onto Rosa Laxa rootstock, which rarely suckers.... some nursery people use a different variety called Rosa Multiflora.... this is more inclined to sucker.... your white rose looks to me like Multiflora.... you should remove this sucker from its source which will be below the graft union... you need to scrape away the soil to reveal it and then cut it right out... otherwise, in time, it will take over...
....otherwise, a very pretty pink rambler....
Wow, that it so very interesting! Thank you both so much for your replies. I think we will try to remove the sucker, as the garden is quite small and it is growing like Billyo. The flowers are very pretty, but the stems are really quite wild and uncontrollable and grow out of reach over our wall ( not sure our neighbours are quite so keen on having it in their garden).
Thanks again - always something new to learn.
