i have aphids by the thousand all over my lupins any ideas for next year now

Onions? Truth is Helen, lapins have a species of greenfly which are specific to them, the name being (not surprisingly) 'lupin aphid'. They are much larger than other species and I'm afraid you'll always be bothered with them if you grow lupins....much as you will always attract blackfly when you grow nasturtiums.
I think it's called the joy of gardening.
