Irene wish I could help, I'm pretty new gardener too and my weakest area is lawn, ours was laid new turf last year and I've done all right I think, raked , mowed, reseeded, then did it all again 6 weeks later... It still looks a bugger, more bare patches than grass, am ashamed of it, don't know how to make it better, hope you get yours sorted

Buddy boy, I did it all except top dressing, aerated, brushed sand in, watered it and it' s still crap! We go away sat, would it be an idea to reseed and fertilise so it will be un disturbed for 10 days?

don't fertilize the grass seeded area, you'll burn the new roots off before they have time to take.

aerate the ground and break the surface up lightly with a tyned rake (the sprung variety) then seed, and water well, it is looking like next week is going to be showery so now might be a good time to sow. and make sure you keep the birds off it as they'll eat all the seed given half the chance!

What sort of situation and soil do you have?  If it's very shady you can get some special types of grass that do better in those conditions and might out-compete the moss.

hi ythanks for answers it was great last year soil clay garden east facing , hardely gets any sun late autumn til mid spring, was totally mud in some places.til we reseeded, it was an improvement but still bare patches, we did water when it was new , 1 problem could be the top end was covered in fallen fig leaves which i didn't remove promptly, apart from that i don't know, i will areate, rake reseed and water today or tomorrow then, as while we're away it won't get walked on, also i think last time we mowed it i set the mower really short and it seemed to tear some turf, thanks for advice, 1 more thing, am i just seeding or adding anything else? compost? excuse my amazing lack of knowledge, i'm getting better at plants but the lawn is beyond me

If you cannot get that then use a fine compost and mix with your grass seed. I normally use one bucket of fine compost to 2-4  big handfuls of seed. Mix well and water lightly after sowing.
