  • Nothing to worry about. It is only an excess of pectin seeping out, it is what make plum jam set so well! Just leave them to ripen and rub of the exudate when you eat and you will come to no harm at all.

  • Has any one every tried to take cuttings from a Forest Pansy? Cercis whatsitsname.

It is a very expensive small tree/shrub to buy and mine is overhanging the path rather too much. If no info forthcoming I'll have to try everything!

Hello georgiesunflower. I don't know if this would work, but have you tried layering ?

  • I'll give it a go if I can get suitable vegetation near to the ground, thanks.

its caused by  a fly and is a constant bind as it makes the plums go bad ,

If it's pectin (which I doubt, actually, but am prepared to be convinced) could it be added to strawberry jam to make it set?    I bought 2kg dirt cheap last week and have made 6lb of somewhat runny jam.

I have the same issue - the plums with sap are otherwise healthy, but I also have many other plums that seem to have started to rot - will all my plums go this way?

Its the plum sawfly and its the biggest pain in my life. The fly comes in spring just before the blossom opens. It lays its egg and when they hatch they crawl into the tiny plums that appear after the blossom falls. You will notice at this time a tiny black spot usually at the end but cld be in other places and if you cut it open you will see the grub. If its a pinky orange its the sawfly. You need to pick all the damaged fruit off otherwise when they drop the grub crawls out and down into the ground which is where it waits till next spring. It then hatches and the cycle starts again. My Victoria is 10 yrs old and due to this fly I never get more than half a dozen edible fruit which is bad going as when the fruit sets theres probably over 300 fruit. Victoria is the worst plum tree for this, I have 8 other different ones and never a problem.

Georgiesunflower. I usually take hardwood cuttings of this tree around the same time I take cuttings from my roses and shrubs. I put them all in a trench together and leave them till next Autumn. By the middle of Spring you shld get new leaves so you will know which have taken. Take half a dozen they might not all take and if they do you ll have some to sell.
