Problem with bush/tree in back garden

hello, i'm new to gardening (this is the first time i've ever had a garden of my own) and i'm having some difficulties with a bush/tree in my back garden. can anyone tell me what it is from the pictures? my problem is that it is shedding leaves horribly, and i'm having to sweep up piles of them every day! does this mean it's diseased? to be honest i don't like it very much so i wouldn't be devastated if it had to go, but i need to let the landlord know before i remove it! i would be grateful for any info. thanks!

  • Looks like a pyracantha, they drop tons of leaves at this time if year

  • hello, thanks for the responses! i'm not sure that it's pyracantha as it isn't prickly at all. in may it had lots of clusters of tiny white flowers for a week or two, which turned brown almost straight away (you can see the remains of them in the pictures). it doesn't have any berries that i've seen. hmm!

It may just need a good drink of water.  The photo isn't too clear, but those look like berries.

If I was the landlord I would not allow you to remove that tree!  Unless, of course, there are lots of other trees.

Why not give it a reprieve til the autumn, then you will definately know, maybe just a haircut for now, and like welshonion says give it a good drink, it might turn out to be a beauty image
  • thanks for all the help, i confirmed that it is a pyrocantha (just not spiky or thorny at all). i'm going to have it cut back a bit and give it a good watering and see how it goes image
