I refuse to be bamboozled !

I have bought a Bambusa metake. I think they are the clump variety and therefore are not too invasive. 

Anyway, I want to put in in a barrier of some kind to stop it spreading. It is going in  bedding against a fence at the side of the garden. The garden centre recommended pond liner to build a barrierl underground for it. However, I read somewhere that it is better to use material that is porous and lets the water out. I also read on this site that if using pond liner you should make holes in it to let the water drain, but maybe the invasive roots will go out of these holes.

If the new bamboo is put within a barrier of new compost how healthy will it stay if that earth does not mix with the existing earth? Maybe it will eventually lose its nutrients and not receive any from any adjoining earth. 

I am also not sure if you have to put a lining underneath the plant as someone said those roots go straight down. 

I have seen what seem to be large sheets of plastic on the internet that look very expensive. Can anyone suggest a barrier material for my bamboo and describe the best way of planting it?
