When do I harvest Scarlet curly kale

Hi, I planted some Scarlet Kale as per pack instructions in April.  It has now reached 16 inches high and looking healthy.  The packet says to harvest Aug - Dec year 1 and Jan - Feb year 2??? I am confused.  Any advise please.  Many thanks.

Hi, all that means is it will be ready between august and feb, but the best thing about growing your own is you can ignore all that and harvest when you want, if you want tiny, tender leaves, then you can, its entirely up to you image

I've not grown Scarlet Kale, but I have grown ordinary Curly Kale and I've never harvested it until the cold weather strikes us - I find it's a good crop that stands the bad weather when other veg are scarce.

Have you staked it?  I've always tied mine to a stout cane to prevent wind damage in the  winter.

I've just bought seeds for scarlet kale, they are advertised as being grown like cut and come again leaves rather than singular large plants. Just snip off individual leaves as you want them, not too much off one plant at once

  • Thank you all very much for advise, I know whats for dinner tonight image
