crab apple

I have a crab apple tree (I think ) which was in the garden when I moved here and I don't know how old it is. It is situated beside another apple tree in a shady corner between the house and a high conifer. It has produced fruit over the last six years at least and last year it produced more than ever. But this year it appears to have died over winter with not a bud, or shoot or flower or leaf in sight. It just looks dead. Can anyone suggest a cause and do you think I should just dig it up? Thanks

Hi, sorry but it sounds dead, it may have exhausted itself last year and just didnt have the energy for walking up this year, probably best to dig it up. Id give the area a good mulch with well rotted FYM as it sounds like there is quite a demandon the soil image

Thanks for your reply. I think it may be a very old tree anyway.and probably not in the best of positions. That's a wee job for my husband today????
