usually its 6 foot 6 inches (2m) for a fence, but I think you can add another 2 foot on top if its made of open trellis, but I may be wrong. if I am people will correct me
I really like the hedge even though it has killed half the garden (the neighbours can't see at all into the garden from their top windows! great hedge ) but now it is brown and if it is never going to come back green then i don' t think i would want it anymore.

That's about what we've got (with the trellis on top) and no one has objected.
