Yes, that is the spent flower. The leaves are about 9-10 inches across so not a heuchera. On stalks about 2ft tall. These are the flowers which come out in May.

I have written it down now so will practise every time I see it. It is a very good plant, nice and sturdy, no staking required and goes a nice red colour in the autumn. Well recommended for a half shady corner.

Does it need damp soil? I've never got one because I always see it beside water and I haven't got any reliably damp soil. We saw some at Barnsdale. Lovely foliage plant after the flowers.
The leaves definetely look like Darmera, but the flowers dont. I grow it around my pond, and the flowers which do come before the leaves on mine are conical.

Could be a heuchera, maybe crispy curly.

Might be Darmera peltata, it's not quite as I know the flowers but could be a variety.

I think you may be right. I thought it began with a D but all I could think of was Datura!
