My son has one which I suspect has been there for many years in a south facing walled garden in the middle of a village which is smothered in the most delicious smelling flowers.  He chops off the bits that get in the way, never waters, never feeds (he doesn't do gardening yet but I'm working on him).

I think they're happy or they're not and you need to plant one when you're quite young if you want to see it at it's best or buy a house with an established one like my lucky son did image
