Lillies

image

I thought at first I'd been a little heavy handed with the watering but I'm horrified to find that something appears to have eaten the bark part of the stalk of 2 of my lillies.  This has caused one to collapse completely and the one photo looks weak.  Does anyone know what could have caused this please?  I'm not generally troubled with slugs and I spray the lillies to prevent red lilly beetle and there is no evidence of them being present on the lillies.

I can't enlarge the photo without it going blurry but I suspect the culprit may be a mammal - rabbit or small deer possibly?

Can they get access to your garden?

We don't have deer on the IOM and I think it's probably unlikely that it's a rabbit because we've fenced them all out but I agree, it does look rather like a nibbling animal.  Do you think if I put some Vaseline on the stems it will deter them?

Could be a rat or squirrel, do you have either?.

Wont be slugs, you have enough pellets  there for a whole garden.

We don't have squirrels - ha ha, it sounds like we don't have anything on the IOM!!!  We do have Manx cats though.  Seriously, I think yes, maybe a rat is the culprit.  Presumably I can get something to deter them?

(I've attached a photo of our Manx kitten - although sadly no longer with us as he was run over)

Neosorexa for the rats but be very careful where you put it, its lethal for the cats, as are the slug pellets!

Your little cat was beautiful, such a shame when they get run over. Mine just sleeps in the middle of the road, he wakes at the slightest sound if a car comes and runs in. Hopefully he always will.
