Acer tree is dying

Hello everyone,
My first post and sad to say my prize Acer appears to be dying. Branches are drying and the leaves are brown and curling. I have no idea how old the tee is, we moved in 5 years ago and it was a mature tree then but it appears to be slowly dying off and have no idea why.
We are desperate to save it, does anyone have any idea whats wrong and how we can save it, its too big and lovely to just chop down

Welcome to the forum Ash. It's a great, friendly place. Someone clever may be along soon to help with your problem.
We also had a mature acer when we moved here 20 odd years ago and I would be upset too. There does seem to be a problem with missing bark in the first pic and that may have let in bugs/virus. All I would know to say is prune back all the damaged parts and give it a good feed and mulch. (I'm here to learn too)
Hello LesleyK
Thank you for the welcome. We did have a pruning session a week or so ago and since then more branches and leaves have turned brown. I fear what ever it is might be spreading. I will look up mulching and see what it is! *I'm very green when it comes to gardening!*
So reading up, mulch is basically a compost that you ouse to cover over the ground ... will nip up top B&Q and see what they stock, it can't hurt to try ...
