Dutch Iris

Hi guys,

image

I planted a load of irises a while ago, and they finally came into bloom about 2 weeks ago. I'm new to gardening, but from reading various sources, I understand that these should bloom through the Summer. I've attached a picture of how they're looking now - are they dying already? I gave them a good watering 2 days ago but they continue to deteriorate. They're in a good sunny spot and I've watered them 1-2 times per week since I planted them.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Rob

They bloom in summer but not through the summer. I don't find they're worth the space for the short display they give.

A good way to find out about what looks good in a garden at this time of year is to visit some. The big ones or those that open for the NGS and local charities. Garden owners are usually willing to tell you about their plants.

You'd do better with some hardy perennials plus plants like dahlias and salvias for flowering through the summer

NGCARDS I couldn't have put it better myself " a fleeting display", or , in other words, as nutcutlet said " don't find they're worth the space "

Just googled that one VS. Looks nice.

But it's a bearded so it should be there all the time.

I shall continue to see irises as 'one hit wonders' until proved otherwise

  • lol I suppose it comes down to how much you like them as to whether they are worth the bother image

'Dutch' Iris are best just squeezed in around other plants rather than planted on their own. Plant the bulbs in autumn you only need a narrow hole to put them in
