What is the best way to care for my strawberries?

Hi there

As I have said in a previous post, I am very new to this site...and to gardening, so I offer my apologies if this type of post has been asked and answered.

I was given some strawberries by a friend of mine which my partner put into hanging baskets and also into a raised flower bed with my other plants. We have been watering them once a day and it appears to be working as we are getting our first little strawberries growing, albeit very green for the moment!

I was wondering if there was anything special I should be doing or feeding them with in order to get the best flavour when they are fully grown?

If you could offer your advice, I would be extremely grateful.

Thank you in advance,

Becky

Hi Becky, welcome! Tomato fertiliser once a week usually does the trick, never let them dry out, keep underneath the plants clear of dead leaves etc and the ones in the raised bed will like some well rotted horse poo in autumn. image
  • Thanks so much - i'll pop out this weekend and get some tomato fertiliser. I'll also be sure to clear any dead leaves! I'm sure my cats will steer well clear of the horse poo too so all round a great help!! image

Becky, May i suggest you cover them with netting, or the birds might enjoy them first. Good luck.
  • Thank you, that's a good suggestion. I will most definitely be visiting the garden centre this weekend. Thank you so much for your help. Can't wait to try the fruits of my labour....literally image

You may find that there are other places that are cheaper for nets and such like- garden centres always seem so much more expensive for me image

Wilkinsons is usually quite good, B&Q have their moments or sometimes just your bog standard supermarket.

I've got canes from pound shops too

Sorry to swamp you! Please make sure your netting is tight, birds often get tangled and die in netting, its not good for the birdies, but might put you off too image

Just been thinking, you mihht find chicken wire easier as you wont need to use anything to support it- they had rolls of it in the pound shop by me, please post if you need help, i understand we all get a bit over excited and start hurling info!!! image
  • Could anyone advise how long  you should keep strawberry plants.  I have a bed of strawberry plants which appear to be healthy enough but do not fruit.
