Lawn Reseeding Advice - First Timer!

Hi,

The lawn of a house I recently bought was until recently infested with weeds and moss which i've now removed using a mixture of weed and moss killer, and manual grafting (I've attached a picture below of how it now looks).

According to the weed killer instructions I can reseed the lawn soon, and I understand I'll need to spread grass seeds and then cover them with a thin layer of soil. Considering the patchy bits of grass left, what would be my best approach? For a nice looking new lawn, should I...

a) Remove the remaining grass and then reseed (if so what's the cheapoest/easiest way of removing the grass?)

b) Scatter seeds and soil over the non-grassy areas only

c) Scatter seeds and soil over both the grassy and non-grassy areas

d) something else!

Any help would be appreciated as this will hopefully be the first and last time I do this!

Cheers, Andy

You have not got a lot of grass left have you? You will be more or less seeding a whole lawn and the best time to do that is in the autumn - Sept/Oct. If you can wait until then, keep the lawn well weeded then rake the bare earth and sow. If you cannot wait, lift the rest of the grass with a spade, skimming it off thinly, rake over and firm then rake again and then buy turf. But do keep it well watered.

Or, I have reseeded largish areas of my lawn in summer by mixing a pailful of fine compost with a couple of large handfuls of grass seed and sprinkling it around. As long as you keep it moist it should be ok. Personally I would try this. I am a firm believer in doing as much as possible when the will takes me and not when the book says is the right time! Sometimes you win, sometimes you don't but what the heck is a packet of grass seed going to cost.

Looks like its wasnt very happy before, which is why you had to spent time sorting out the issues, it may be that grass dosent grow well in that spot, is it shady, was there previously a dog or kids? Its best to sort out any underlying issues now, or you will be back where you started in 12 months or so. image

Just done mine..Wish I had waited till autumn but needs must.. The big problem with doing it now is all the weed seeds land and grow and its hard to get to them without walking on the new grass.. Still at least they are green image

  • Hi everyone, and thanks a lot for the advice! I'll reply to the main themes and questions I picked up from all of your responses, rather than a message per reply to keep the thread tidy.

I'm not really in a rush to have grass so for now I'll dig up the remaining grass and keep the soil weed free, then at the start of September I'll aerate, moisten and then reseed the lawn - and then not let it dry out.

The previous owners had a child but we don't so the new lawn should take less of a battering. I am planning on having a border on the left by the fence too as that area is under constant shade.

Thanks a lot for the video, I'll watch it later but the description sounds ideal!
