Good evergreen hedge plant?

Pld2Pld2 Posts: 5

What plants are the best for hedging  behind a front garden 4m wide? I'd like something evergreen but not privet. Buxus, yew? Ideally fast or medium growing to cover the area quickly.

thanks

Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.

  • Prunus lusitanica - makes excellent hedge. HC

Yew is probably my favorite but ive got escallonia in the front garden, the easiest thing in the world to grow, and at this time of year mine has tiny red flowers which the bees go mad for! image

Laurel would be my first thought but Lonicera is quite quick growing and makes a nice hedge too.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Id forgotten about pyracantha, very nice.

Whats that one with the tiny scented flowers? Oleaster ebbingii? There is one by our local tesco, smells amazing image
  • Mock Orange is a favourite of mine. The scent is amazing with your windows open it will waft in. Grows pretty quickly and forms a good hedge too! image

I love Mock Orange (Philadelphus) too, love the perfume, but the Original Poster wants an evergreen hedge.

Dont know where you are or how exposed it will be.

    Viburnum

    Gardenia?

Copper beech (not evergreen but will have leaves)

You could always use a climber like clematis armandii, or evergreen honeysuckle ? image
