Lilac leaf problems

I have a lilac which is only in its 2nd year. Last season it grew well and looked fine until the last 6 weeks or so. Since then, the leaves have shown large brown, splotchy patches and then starting to curl up and the edges. I've taken to a bug spray (perhaps aphids ?) but not sure if effective yet.

I've attempted to attach my photo but unsure if this was loaded okay.
I don't think so as the spray was over a week ago and rained a few times since. I'll go for the organic approach of cutting away the "infected" areas and removing them entirely. Next up some mulching and then possibly some anti-fungal spray.
