Nasty grubs making a meal of my vibirnum

Hi All,

I'm new to this site. I'm desperate to find out what is attacking my vibirnum (can't spell it) hedge in my front garden. The leaves have got holes all over and the are shrivelled and dying. The critters are white 2mm grubs with brownish heads. Defo not vine weevil grubs. The same things may have decimated an old cherry tree in the back garden. Similar leaf damage but too high to see if there are grubs on the leaves.

Any Help and advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Does the Viburnum smell appallingly bad? If so then you have a Viburnum beetle infestation. You need to spray with a contact insecticide on the under side of the leaves too.

  • I haven't noticed a bad smell, apart from cat pee or maybe that IS the bad smell. I have looked on other sites and the grubs don't look like the pictures I've seen of Viburnum Beetle grubs. Thanks for your help Berghill!

There are a lot of things which eat leaves to skeletal remains. Some people have described the smell from these grubs as being like Cat urine. As I said, all you can do is spray with a contact insecticide. Not keen on using them myself, but sometimes you have to.

  • thank you again Berghill, I'll try it.
