Carnivorous plants

RubyLeafRubyLeaf Posts: 260

Watching the latest gardeners world I was delighted to see Monty aquired his first carnivorous plants. They're just superb at catching pests in the greenhouse. Sundews catch those pesky gants with ease, soon filling up its sticky leaves. Pitchers are the champions at catching flies, and known to catch wasps. Butterworts catch gnats and whitefly upon their buttery feel leaves equally as sticky as sundews. Whilst not known for it (I believe so anyway) my venus flytrap caught a slug. The unfortunate slug had half in, half out lets say.

If you plan on getting a Sundew, this particular one (or rather lets say shape) has caught the most gnats in my greenhouse http://www.hantsflytrap.com/ds005-dcapensis-alba-18-p.asp

It was really nice to see these plants get coverage, if only mentioned briefly on Garderners world, and I hope they get more in the future image

These plants are very interesting,I had two from jersy plants.the funnel type are in my kitchen window. I have not actually seen the flies being attracted to the sticky of the funnels but I do feed them the dreaded Lily Beatle.

I knock them into a container and transfer to the waiting plants.

This is how I see it , Lily Beatles eat my plants ,my plants eat them .so it's a case of what goes around comes around!

This year one of the plants sent an interesting spike up, turned out it s a beautiful unusual flower .I shall cut it  and add to a display if dried grasses and hope it isn't a one off .
