Is This A Rose Sucker?

Hello,
I am new to growing roses this year and I have a few growing in pots. I noticed some new growth this morning and was wondering whether this was a Rose Sucker? I know they grow from the base but I'm not too sure whether this is one or not.

no,it's good strong new growth. Suckers tend to be pale green

The one on the left's definitely not a sucker - that's a new shoot on your rose bush.

Not 100% sure about the smaller ones although my instinct is that they're fine too - they look so similar to the other new growth.

When you planted the rose, did you bury the graft point or is that what I can see at soil level?

I don't know how much you know, so forgive me if I give info you already know, but roses are grafted onto a different rootstock. The union, where they meet should be planted about 5 cm / 2 " below ground . This stops the roots getting light and heat, which tends to cause suckers, and also encourages the " top growth" to form their own roots.

If you take cuttings of your roses , you never get suckers, but grafting is far quicker for commercial growers to produce plants.

  • I buried the graft point but I think the soil level has decreased in the past few months so I am going to add a fresh layer today. I only just noticed it after taking this photo lol

Thanks for your help, I think I was just confused as the new growth is a different colour and it's been a while since I saw new growth on the roses lol image

Is your rose a deep red colour?  I find that the new growth of red roses is often quite red itself image

NG, Compost does oxidise over time so you will notice the soil level dropping in pots.

  • It was meant to be Red but it's actually a vibrant pink! lol I got my roses in a mixed lot from work and my boss wasn't sure they were the varieties as claimed anyway, so I guess I'l never know what variety they are image

  • It could be as that was one of the varieties he apparently got, this was part of a 'deep secret' bundle I think which it obviously isn't lol
