Ivy
I'm sure I've read somewhere on this form about super strength glyphosate that will kill ivy. Does anyone know what it's called please? I've got ivy coming through from my neighbour's fence so I can't get to the roots and will just have to deal with the leaves that come through. It's by my beautiful new hostas so I shall be very cross if the ivy threatens them! At the moment, the hostas are about 50cm away from the ivy so will it be ok to spray the ivy so it won't harm the hostas?

My neighbour doesn't want the ivy so it's not a problem to kill it. Yes, I could just cut the ivy back, but I'm looking for a more long term solution.
We got rid of ivy by digging it out and then spraying any regrowth with standard glyphosate spray from the garden centre. I know you can't dig yours out, but if you spray the ivy (mask the hostas with a sheet of cardboard if there's danger of the spray drifting) and then leave the ivy to go brown before pulling it out.
You'll probably have to do it two or three times a year if the ivy next door isn't got rid of, but the glyphosate will go back to the main roots and at least weaken it - if you're consistent enough you may even manage to kill it off for next door too!
Good luck

Thanks Dovefromabove. So will my favourite resolva do the job? I don't mind doing it 2 or 3 times a year.
I think that should be fine.
It helps to bruise the leaves a bit first - sort of breaks down that waxy coating that ivy leaves have so the stuff can penetrate.

Excellent. Thanks very much.
Dovefromabove! I've just been working around my hostas and noticed that the ivy's all gone brown and has responded very well to the resolva. It's well back from my hostas now so I'm very happy. Success! Thanks again for your help.
