Turnips (woody)

Hi I am new to the forum and I am looking for some advice please.  My turnips which are Purple top Milan have reached large golf ball/tennis ball size.  Very exciting as this is my first attempt at growing turnips.  Unfortunately they are visibly good but are woody, why would this be?

How long since you sowed them?  They do get woody if left too long. They ought to be ready for pulling from 6 -8 weeks.

  • Hi, I grew them from seed at the end of March.  As I mentioned, they are only small, no bigger than a small tennis ball. Thanks

Purple Top Milan are an early variety - usually pulled when they're about the size of a billiard ball - they do get woody after that.

  • Thank you for the response.  I have pulled them all up now and have tried to slice one that is smaller than a billiard ball... still tough.  Turnips are not for me.  Thanks
