Hello James
Incorporate as much organic matter as you can into the soil, farmyard manure, leaf mould, garden compost etc - you'll find that worms will soon appear in your garden.
When we came here the soil was dry and thin and there were very few worms. Three years of doing the above and whenever I turn any soil there are several worms to be seen.
Whether your soil is thin and gritty or heavy clay, incorporating organic material will improve the fertility and drainage and increase the worm population.
Good luck

tried it still no luck did find a white/light grey worm while digging while it was lying on the top of the soil it chanced colour from light grey to purple and was rapidly off into the soil I had to dig like a mad thing to get it out again .put it into a container and it went white again it gave off a foul smell the next day second day it was dead funny thing is the worms are back now .
Why did you put it in a container? You killed it
There are lots of different types of worms in the soil, different colours, different sizes http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/life/other-invertebrates/earthworm-slideshow/index.html?utm_source=youtube-earthworms-short-url&utm_medium=youtube-earthworms-short-url&utm_campaign=youtube-earthworms-short-url
You say you tried doing what I suggested but had no luck - then you go on to say tthat 'the worms are back now'. It sounds as if what I suggested worked. You just needed to be patient.
Leave the worms alone to do what they need to do in your soil - don't put them in containers

I forgot to say in my previous message the worm I found was in my veg patch which has had plenty of manure homemade compost and my used tomato grow bags plus no worms in my compost heap . I have five worm bins and sometimes they overflow with worms so I put some into the heap any way as I said they are back now
