Diseased Plant

Hi

I recently moved into a property and in my shady corner is this rather poorly shrub. The landlady thinks its a member of the laurel family.

Can anyone please identify and tell me what is wrong with it?

Or should I just dig it up?

Looks like 'shot hole' which can be caused by either a fungus or a bacteria.  It is not serious for the health of the plant and is due to the weather - damp conditions.  The laurel should get over it as conditions improve, but as it is looking very sorry for itself, spraying with a general fungicide might be a good idea.  The RHS advice is here:

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • I am not sure that it is a laurel, to me it looks like it could be Viburnum tinus, in which case it is probably an attack by viburnum beetle larvae.  Spray it with provado and give it a feed, hopefully new growth will come back and it will look a lot better.

I'd go with the Viburnum and its beetles as well

I'm no user of chemicals and my feeling is that it's too late anyway, they've been, they've eaten and now will be doing whatever they do next

    I agree with Nut.

It also looks really congested - I'd pull out other plants/weeds from underneath/amongst it and try to get some fresh air through it and then give it a feed of Fish, Blood and Bone and a good watering.

Can't do any harm and might do some good. image
