Shasta daisies

I bought 3 pots a few months ago and on planting up they romped away.  However two are  all of a sudden looking sickly - like they are dying back.  I can see lots of tiny leaves around the base.  Shall I chop them back almost to the ground?

I'd cut off everything except those little leaves at the base but I'd also tip it out and check for livestock in and around the roots

Thanks both.  I levered them up and roots were still pot shaped and very very dry.  So I'm guessing that they romped into growth and then had too much greenery to cope with the hot dry spell we've had.  I've been a bit lax with watering.  Have loosened roots (had to be quite rough, hoping ok), have cut right back. New compost.  Good soaking.  Fingers crossed....

    Much apprec.

Rough with the roots is good.image

a good soaking for the root ball would make sure it's wet right through, sometimes it's hard to get compost to start absorbing water again when completely dry. If it doesn't liven up dunk it in a bucket of water

Oh wish I'd thought to soak the root ball! Well, will get them back out and do so if they don't perk up.  ta

  • Hope you don't mind me jumping on this thread, I have some shasta daisies I got from a friend, they have flopped over quite a lot and leaves have spots on them.  There are some new shoots at the base.  Will these die back over the winter or will these survive the winter and build on this in the spring? I'm willing the clumps to get bigger to fill a few spaces they have gone into.
