What is eating my redcurrants?

Does anyone know what could possibly be eating my redcurrants? I bought a new little bush earlier in the year which is now about 2 feet high and planted it in a gap amongst the already established blackcurrants and raspberries. But in the last week or so something or someone has eaten almost all the new little redcurrant berries that were hanging from it image The thing that is baffling me is that whatever it was left the thousands of blackcurrants and raspberries and just went for the few redcurrants I had. There is no bird poo anywhere around there to give any clues.

Any ideas?image

(I have since covered everything with netting!)

Pigeons and blackbirds would be on my list of suspects. Mine are busy on the cherries which are nowhere near ripe.

Blackbirds for sure.  You have to be very careful with netting and leave no gaps.  It's light very, very early in the morning; they have hours in which to prospect the gaps in your defences.

  • Hmm blackbirds could well be the culprits. But why only those berries and not the others?

Who can fathom the mind of a blackbird ... just thank your lucky stars you've got some fruit left.

I've got some fledgling blackbirds who've taken up residence in the thicket of raspberry canes - I'm sure they're just waiting ..............
