Garlic Rust

Hi all,

A seemingly simple question yet I cannot find the answer to it anywhere!

'Are garlic bulbs/cloves, whose leaves have suffered from rust, safe to eat?

Many Thanks!

    Hi James image

Yes, it's fine to eat - it might affect storage qualities so make use of it early image

We've got a bit of rust on ours too - we'll look out for Early Purple for next time as trials have shown it to have a bit of rust resistence

  • Thats great thank you.

This year has not been a good year for rust because of all the on off weather. Just as an FYI here is what I am growing

    Solent Wight
    Provence Wight
    Early Purple Wight
    Vallelado Wight

The Vallelado is what has the rust. This was planted back in October and has been growing strong right up until it got the Rust the day before yesterday. So thankfully the bulbs are probably big enough to be used now, I have cut all the rust leaves off and will keep an eye on it over the next few days and see what happens. If I do have to pull them at least they are big enough.

The other three that I have plated were all planted in February I think and they all seem to be fine at the moment (touch wood)

Again thanks for the speedy reply!
