What is this plant?

Hello 
My boyfriend and I recently bought a house with a large garden. There are a lot of plants, some I can identify and some I have no idea.
One in particular I would love an identification on. When I first saw it I thought it was japanese knotweed but on closer inspection I can see it is not. But I can't find anything that looks like it
Can anyone help?
