What is this pest?

There is tiny bits of white sticky stuff appeared on the leaves on an acer.  It seems to have a maggot type thing underneath.  What is it please?  Will Provado help remove it?  Many thanks, Mags

Are they wool aphids? If so provado will do the job.

Is wooly aphid sticky?  This stuff is.   Mags

And what is under the white sticky stuff isn't an aphid - more like a small maggot with a brown head.  Sorry, I can't supply a photo.  Mags

Yes as I remember it's a waxy type of sticky.

Yes, I googled and  found a couple of pics that look like my problem.  Interesting to see that the bonsai acers at Kew Gdn have the same problem!  Thanks very much, Mags

Wooly aphid I think.  Anyway, the Provado seems to have done the trick as there is very little of the pest visible today.  Thanks for everyones help.  Mags

Just take a few minutes to consider before you spray.

You'll be killing more than a few aphids. Is your need for a pristine leaf enough to warrant the use of a systemic insecticde.

Check out what Provado does and what it kills

  • Hi there,

Can anyone help? I am not sure if this is Wooly Aphid or not?!

Acer seems happy, no other problems to report, and I have had it for a long time, so would hate to loose it.

    Thanks in anticipation

@mel-6QmTMC5. You've put this query on the end of a very old thread dating from 2014.  It might be better to start a new thread, with a title such as    What's this?    then include your photo. 😊
