Grit / sharp sand

The potting on instructions suggest that a mixture of good compost and grit should be used. I do not have grit but I have a bag of sharp sand - could I use that instead?

I would use the sharp sand but beware that builders sharp sand can have lots of salt in it. Horticultural sharp sand is best.
