Agapanthus pest

Linda 21Linda 21 Posts: 34

A friend has asked me what could be eating his agapanthus flower buds.  Sorry no picture, and no further info, but I have never come across anything eating my Agapanthus before, so I am at a loss.  Could only suggest slugs or snails, but he said the plants are in a tall pot, and it is only the flower bud that is attacked.  Any suggestions?

Have you seen how high they climb? imageimage

I had a large snail climbing up one of my blackthorn hedging whips - three feet up at least. He's gone  to the great snail graveyard in the sky....image

I don't know if earwigs eat  Agapanthus - Dahlias are the usual targets but someone else here might know if that's a possibility. It may be worth looking that up on t'interweb to check.

I looked in my gardening books and they all seem to agree that Agapanthus are not usually bothered by pests.  I t didn't mention earwigs, so I will google that and check.  I still think it may be snails but it is curious that they are only eating the flower buds.  I suppose I shall have to go and have a look and take a photo....

    They're sneaky Linda...image

I didn't think they were particularly prone to much either, but slugs and snails have just been taking over the world this year. You'll just have to set up 24 hour surveillance image

Have been to see the plants and found the culprits!    Snails as we thought.  Obvioulsy the flower buds taste better than the leanves.   Thanks everyone
