Scale on Blackcurrant/Redcurrant bush

Up to now my husband has had the unenviable task of manually scraping the eggs off the branches.

This is the first year we have had it and it has appeared on a bush which was moved to a different part of the garden.

Is there a chance that it could have moved over from a different sort of plant near to that new position in the garden

You could try using an organic winter tree wash in late winter/early spring.  Many are garlic based.  Scale insects are difficult to treat right now and it's most effective to do what you are already doing (ie hand-scraping) but then target the young insects as they are hatching.  You can do that by spraying with various organic pest sprays but for a bad infestation an insecticide which is safe for use on edible crops would be the most effective, although you may get good results using a pyrethrum-based one (extracted from plants of the chrysanthemum family and sometimes called nature's own insecticide) if you consider that natural enough.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
