Cold Frames

I would like to start putting veg etc in a cold frame to get a headstart next year.

Starting seedlings and hardening plants before they go out is the norm but I want want to maximise the yield I get from the Cold frame.

Ideas most wecome.

I have a mini-greenhouse which does the same sort of thing. One extra use I have found for it is to dry off my onions, shallots and garlic if the weather is unsettled when they're ready to harvest.

  • I'll try that, thank you.

Has any one tried growing anything exotic in a cold frame?

Melons do well in a cold frame as do cucumbers.

I've got peppers in my cold frame since I haven't got a greenhouse yet.

I will go for the onion drying tip but be warned to tend your seedlings well. I've over watered and under watered this year to leave me gaps and failed germinations.

Basil. Basil! Basilimage It's an impossible task for me I think

Wintersong if you struggle buy growing basil from SM pot it on and then split it. image

  • Has any one got advice on heating said cold frame?

I've been looking at various size Paraffin heaters, is there any particular one that is recommended?

Winter- I grow basil indoors. I just sow thinly  in 3" pots of ordinary compost and leave them on  sunny windowsills and then split them up into clumps when they're big enough. I tend to leave it till about May so that they grow away quickly so perhaps that's the reason they do well. I did some two weeks ago and it's about an inch high and needs splitting up already. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
