Mangetout and sugarsnap

Hi again - I am growing mangetout and sugarsnap -both are making lots of topgrowth, but not many pods - should I pinch out the growing tips to make them start producing veg?   I took some for my grand-daughters and those (which are still in a large pot - rather than a raised bed) are doing better than mine - smaller but with more pods!!

Thanks for any help with this

  • Don't nip the tips out just be patient they'll come. I have a 6m row of mange tout sow successionally since beginning of feb and the first 30 plants are producing pods now I had a good staggering of plants over weeks from feb to end of April and all are growing steady and should all crop well.
  • I'm pleased to report your advice was good - I have now had four lots of meals (for two) from my plants and have pushed new peas in the ground to come up later.  Your ideas about staggering right from Feb to the end of April seems a good idea for next year. The ones with the greatest top growth were grown indoor in pots to start - next year I may not bother with this as the direct sown ones are doing well.
