i could be the intermediary  for plant transport assuming we're still on for Barnsdale. I live in Peterborough (more or less) as well

Mine get sun in the morning and late afternoon. They dont like the heat in the middle of the day. They dont like drying out, and they dont like wet feet. They are more likely to freeze in a pot over winter, than in the soil as the tubers are about 6 inches deep.

The RHS did a trial. The report is here.

Stephen, Nut will transport a R.  Kew Beauty for you back to Peterborough.I bought this as a single plant from Bressingham gardens, many years ago. It has only ever been propagated by division so should be true to name, unlike seedlings. You will have to arrange pick up with Nut.

My order from Long Acre plants arrived this morning by courier. Excellent service for £7.50 postage. well packed plants at £6 each.

If you want to start a collection you would do well to start here.

I thought the RHS trial report gave a lot of information. The photos show how well a single tuber will bulk up over a 5 year period. They grew them in raised beds for extra drainage and use shade fabric in high summer.

I am adding a lot of FYM and grit to a clay soil, which is on a slope, and under the pear trees to make a new specialist bed for them.  I seem to lose hardy orchids, but I think these ginger relatives look just as good.

Fidget, thanks for that info - we'll see how R. purps does in the west-facing bed - if it's not happy I'll move it to the Shady Bank image
