white "mould" on my seedling trays

WinniecatWinniecat Posts: 100
I have some seed trays of compost in my greenhouse. The ones with the basil and coriander seeds are fine and germinating well. However, the others that have not yet germinated (perennials) have a white "mould" on the surface. Can anyone tell me what could be causing this please and will it harm the seeds / seedlings?

moist atmosphere will be the cause. I cover my perennial seeds with grit and that helps avoid the moulds and the algaes.

Hardy perennials won't want it too hot and any that haven't germinated might do better outside. It would certainly help with the mould problem.

Hard to say whether it will do any harm but it could overwealm the seedlings as they come though and if it's too wet they might rot.

    Which perennials are you growing?

Echinacea, rudbeckia and eryngium. It is also on the biennial foxgloves

Eryngium does well with an autumn /winter start in the cold. I think they'd all be better somewhere cooler than a GH at this time of year. I have my ungerminated perennials lined up on the shady side of the house outside. From around 11am they're in the shade

Thanks nutcutlet, that makes sense. I'll move them tomorrow. Should I put them in the greenhouse overnight though?

Not if they haven't germinated, there's nothing to harden off. I leave most of my perennials either outside or in an unheated GH all winter. Hardy perennials never need heat and some won't germinate if they don't get cold at some point
