Overgrown cottage garden needs taming

Hi

We have recently bought a cottage where the previous owner was a keen gardener. The garden is extremely full and busy with lots of different plants as you can see from the photos. We would like to tidy it up and create a lawned area but do not know where to start and would like to try save and maybe move a lot of the flowers. We would also like to make a patio area where the bird table is but again there is a lot of flowers/plants, we don't want to get rid of all the plants but we are not sure which ones we would be able to move to a different area without killing them.

Hi Rory, the pics are a bit small and i can't enlarge them and I can't recognise anything. But that garden looks amazing. I wouldn't mind inheriting that. I'd start by weeding, there are bound to be some, and do some planning. Take a lot of photos of what it looks like now and every month through summer. Label plants as keep, dispose of, move etc. Just stick a little plastic label in the ground beside it.

I must be getting past it, took me ages to spell labelimage

Things move better from autumn onwards, September is good for grass seed sowing.

Lots of shrubs will need a prune and if you take a pic we can ID them. Then someone (probably not be) will tell you how to prune them.

I think I can see some hellebores and astrantias there and you may have got some good plants

I think its a case of cant see the wood for the trees at the moment, the garden does look stunning but I think a good prune and tidy up for now the in the autumn when things die back you may find a spot that will suit a lawned area.

    Hi,

I agree with all the comments, just tidy things up take photos often watch your garden then decide what to do, if you go at it in a rush you may end up spending far more than expected, you need to know the areas that your garden gets full sun shade areas damp dark areas by leaving at watch for a while you will see for your self what needs removing where to put a patio and a lawn enjoy it and have fun but do not rush into itimage
