Mahonia Japonica

Morning

I have some Mahonia Japonica in the garden, it seems to be cropping up everywhere.  I'm thinking I need to cut back the main shrub, but any idea how I can stop it sprouting up everywhere else in the flowerbed...

Any advice gratefully received.

Are your sproutings up suckers or seedlings?

I haven't experienced either. A spot more invasiveness would be desirable for me

Not a great photo, but shows it in flower in March, so maybe it is Mahonia Aquifolium ?

    Yes, aquifolium.

I like it but probably wouldn't choose it for the average sized garden. takes up too much space for not enough on offer

  • if it's the oregon grape it will seed everywhere - just pull out the seedlings as soon as you spot them, unless you want to use it for low hedging - prickly leaves?

Well i've learnt something new today, didn't realise there was more than one variety of Mahonia. image

Hmm, I thinking it might benefit from a good prune, and arrgh those seeds...

Thank you for your help, great as ever x

    http://www.mahonia.co.uk/

lots of species plus the hybrids plus the cultivars

Some of them are lovely, shade plants, or partial shade at least, for best effect
