New Acer
I love Acers and have 6 growing in various sized pots and all doing very well, a couple are quite old now. I bought a new one last year called 'Flamingo' very pink with some green. However it's nothing like any other acer, seems to grow very straggly with no real shape. It's come back after the winter very strong and healthy but I'm not sure whether to try to shape it, would be grateful for advice.

Hi Colleen
most of the decorative acers that are grown in pots are cultivars of Acer palmatum. I googled acer flamingo and it's Acer negundo, a different species. I have plain Acer negundo growing in the garden, 'straggly with no real shape' describes it very well. You can prune it, if you cut it right back it will regrow, but it will never look like the others

Thanks for the reply. I love the colour so will keep it towards the back of the group where the straggly look won't matter.
good idea
