Yesterday a trip to Homebase brought back 12 strawberry plants, two garlic chive plants, and a blackcurrant stick for £3.00 (not sure the stick will make it but thought it worth a go to nurse ready for planting out next year).I would have had more but I couldn't find a basket!
Whilst tidying up the pots this evening I've just realised that had I brought these plants at the peak of their season (aka when Homebase was still remembering to water them) it would have set me back £15.49
Somehow ended back at Homebase this evening. Came away with two healthy looking Jonkheer Van Tets redcurrant plants and four more garlic chives for ??4.50.
I've just come back in from the garden having scuttled out there with a torch - this little collection in their prime was £14.00 worth!
About two weeks ago we were in B&Q for compost ( i find it extortionate for plants there) and the guy was filling up stands with bedding/basket plants eight plants to a tray some were a bit leggy some in need of a watering, couldn't believe it when he said they were 20p a tray, we got 11 tray's when they were wrung up at the till it came to £47 when we explained, the assistant made a call and then apologised and charged us £2.20 for eighty odd plants, had no idea where we were going to put them, but our neighbours and friends soon found homes for them
There is limited space in all shops, so selling cheaply is a good way of getting rid of unwanted stock. Shops know that bargain hunters tend to also buy full price plants at the same time and bargains keep em coming, so it is a win-win for them. End of season in Oct-Dec is a great time for bargains as is buying ahead. winter plants now, spring plants in dec etc.

I bought 2 6ft Cordyline's with thick trunks for £7.50. One of them is in flower. Excellent buy and they delivered them for free!

The way I see it is a win win situation. We save some money and some poor plant that might have died slowly at the bottom of a skip, gets a home

That's a great bargain Tray. They didn't have any clematis that I wanted last time I was there. EV's a lovely clematis and flowers like mad.
