Red or Green Gooseberries

Hi

Can anyone tell me when to pick my gooseberries and also I bought a red variety but all I have is green berries is this normal

    The berries will turn red as they ripen.  If you have a heavy crop you can thin them out now, using the thinnings for jam or chutney.  You could use them in a pie but they will need a lot of sugar as they are unripe.

    Later when they ripen and change colour they'll be sweeter and slightly soft if you squeeze them gently.

    Keep an eye out for blackbirds - they tend to be quicker than us at spotting the ripe ones image
