Problems with Freesia bulbs not growing

Hello,

I purchased some Freesia bulbs single mixed and double mixed in March this year.

I planted the 20 bulbs 2" deep as per the packet in my 12" pot. I used separate pots for the double and single types. I used good quality multi-purpose compost.

I planted the bulbs on the 13th April, and kept in the greenhouse until the risk of frost had past, then stood the pots outside.

Its now 5 June and nothing has come up. So tonight I emptied the pots and the bulbs are still there but have no sign of germination.

I purchased the bulbs from a discount retailer (99p stores) and have had no problem with other bulbs from them.

Please find enclosed a photo of the bulbs after being lifted.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Peter Jones

    Hi Peter,

I've never grown freesia, but what do the bulbs feel like?

Two at approx 5 o'clock on your pic look like they might be alive, or is it just my eyes? It looks like one has a little bulb attached and the one next to it has a shoot?

Hope someone who knows about freesias will see your postimage

I planted some bulbs last year - nothing happened - but this year one flowered! Maybe they take a while to establish / mature?

Yep, I planted 100 freesia bulbs last year and not one single bulb grew.  Nothing this year either although I think I probably removed most of them when planting other things.

I planted some in the greenhouse during the first week of April.

They are just coming through now.  They are just below the surface of the compost.

They are from Peter Nyssen who has always been reliable.

Ive only ever had success with freesias by accident, they had been planted in a pot and put on the windowsill in the spare room, i of course forgot about them. Weeks later (possibly months!) I found beautiful red flowers, maybe the trick is to keep them on the dry side in a sunny spot?

Maybe then they are a greenhouse/inside flower do you think?  Mine were outside from the time of planting ... but I don't think I planted them until about May last year.

Said indoor bulb on the instructions.

  • I planted mine in the Autumn and they came up in leaf pretty quickly. They did shower flower buds in March time but never opened! lol

Hi I planted about 50 Freesia bulbs about 4 weeks ago. The have been coming up very sporadically. Had to move one lot as the pot was water logged. I had put 6 bulbs in this pot and only 2 had popped up, but when I dug these two out, there were two more just shooting and two sitting just the same as when I planted them, not soft or rotten. I replanted the lot in a new pot, and will see what happens. They are all outside btw.
