What veg outside of July and August
in Fruit & veg
This is my first post on the forum so I hope you can help. Most years I tend to go away on holiday for July and August, though this year is an exception. I have just started growing veg and am looking forward to my first crop but foresee a problem next year since most cropping takes pace in these months. Can you please suggest what veg I should be growing to overcome this problem?

Duncan - is it just the cropping you are worried about ? ie do you have someone who can care for stuff (weed, water, the occasional judicious snip) whilst you are away?
Purple sprouting broccoli crops in the spring - its a bit late to sow it now but buy plants from the GC and plant now to harvest next spring.
Sow Broadbeans 'Aquadulce Claudia' in October/November - they'll grow through the winter and crop in the late spring.
Sow Swiss Chard in late August/September and you'll have plenty of chard next spring.
There are also winter hardy varieties of lettuce that you sow in the autumn for spring harvest.
And if you plant a crown of rhubarb this autumn and look after it for a year, in spring 2016 you'll have plenty of rhubarb for a crumble.
Gooseberries too will fruit before you go away, so plant a couple of bushes this autumn.
Early varieties of strawberries will be fruiting in June/July.
That lot should keep you busy
