Ants

Hello everyone.

Our area is plagued with ants every year.  They're in all my tubs, around every root of every bush and tree in my garden and all the spaces between bricks on patio and in my lawn.

They were doing something to the flowers on my strawberry plants, but seem to be leaving the fruit alone (for now).

My question is:  Should I bother to try and get rid of them?  Will they do any real damage?  They are a nuisance as they are seemingly eveywhere (including in the house at one point).

They are a problem if they 'farm' aphids and also if they build nests in the bottom of pots. Ant bate stations are a good chemical way of getting rid of them

  • Thank-you Fleurisa.  I've got some Nippon Gel winging it's way to me as I type.  I really don't like to kill insects if they're not causing any issues but it just seems they are everywhere.

My husband left a lid of a paintpot on the gravel overnight and when I picked it to there was a colony already underneath it.  My Rhubard is overrun.

I'll use the gel when it arrives and see if that reduces the problem.

    Thanks again.

I only bother about them if they are in the greenhouse. I put a puff of ant powder along the door runner the other day and that seems to have sorted them out already. They are quite fascinating to watch if you have a spare few minutes.

  • The other day I watched an ant tugging an earthworm (alive) which was about 2" long and fighting all the way....within 10 mins the ant's pals turned upto help. Amazing to watch - poor worm!
