bolting onions being munched
last year I bought onion sets which could be planted in October. Well, they have come through the winbter but so far I have noticed about 6 bolted and lots had been munched. Does anyone else try planting onions so early? Good idea or not?

I tried this year for the first time. I planted Red Electric sets on 22nd October last year. They grew a few leaves in the autumn, came through the winter unscathed and romped away in the spring. They were starting to swell when I left a week ago so I'm hopeful of a crop before the end of the month, well in advance of the spring planting. No significant pests or diseases, although some of the nearby garlic is covered in rust. A few flower stalks which I've broken off.
