HELP!! Magnolia - strange "mould" on bark

Hi
I'm hoping someone can help as a mouldy looking substance is on the trunk of our magnolia shrub (Susan variety) - its sticky, white with black kinda spots on it.
I have a photo but not sure how to upload
Anyone know why this has happened, and how to rectify? As never seen this before, was planted about 6 years ago, not been moved.
