I think they're using the teasel to move to new nettles, also to drown in. One crashed into their patch, I assume yesterday during the storm so I imagine it disrupted them a bit.
That's a wonderful sight Victoria and just shows what we gardeners can achieve in terms of wildlife conservation.I'm just hoping the Comma that was circling my nettles managed to lay some eggs.
I wonder if people sometimes overestimate the problems bugs or weeds can cause in the garden...I did have to sacrifice part of my sunniest border in order to create the nettle patch but really they're no bother whatsoever...
Found loads of small tortoiseshell caterpillar the other day, have now make a container for the kids to watch them turn then release them, not sure who's more excited me or the kids.
I discovered a couple of patches of caterpillars on the new blackthorn hedge a few days ago Coys - it's great isn't it! Mine are torties or peacocks which were around in big numbers last year. Nice when wildlife likes to set up home because of what you've planted
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I've cheated, I had to climb into the field next to me to find them, I was actually looking for ladybirds when I come across the caterpillars, I've been out at 7 the last 2 mornings getting fresh nettles, lol

Just an update to show their progress:

Haven't seen a sight like that since my childhood
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
V impressed by that, Victoria, and by the fact that they seem to eating teasel!
There's some teasel in there but I think they're working on the nettles
In the sticks near Peterborough
